The nail-biting election between Democrat Doug Jones and Republican Roy Moore finally came to a close on December 12th, resulting in the victory of Doug Jones. Being an outstandingly close vote, the election has much controversy surrounding it from the allegations against Moore to President Trump’s endorsement of Moore and downplay of Jones. Even now, Moore is refusing to concede as him and his supporters rally to investigate the legitimacy of the votes due to voter fraud. Needless to say, this recent election has both parties up in arms as they continue to support their candidates relentlessly during and after the election.

The allegations surrounding Moore began with Leigh Corfman in 1979. Leigh was 14 and Moore was 32, supposedly Moore approached her outside of a courtroom and began conversing with her. Moore told her mother that he would watch Corfman while she went inside the courtroom as a way to save her from the trouble of being in the courtroom. After this, they began to have a relationship and Corfman even alleges that they even had some sexual intimacy during their relationship. Since then, there have been seven other allegations against him, 5 more being underage and the two others, Gena Richardson and Tina Johnson, were of legal age but claim that Moore tried to uncomfortably make romantical advances towards them. These claims had many Republicans in a frenzy until Moore dismissed calling it “vicious and nasty round of attacks against me” (@MooreSenate) made by “liberal media lapdogs” (@MooreSenate). Even after this, some Republicans and many Democrats were astonished, claiming him to be a pedophile; however, President Trump rallied to the side of Moore, calling Jones “a Pelosi/Schumer Puppet” (@realDonaldTrump), leading to many negative remarks to go his way, especially after the results of the election.

Nevertheless, the results of the election led to Jone’s victory with him winning by a vote of 50% versus Moore’s 48%. This victory is more to Democrats than a seat in the Senate, it represents a victory for them in an otherwise extremely Republican state. Although the results between votes for Moore and votes for Jones were neck and neck, there were clear divisions of demographics for the polls. 72% of white males voted for Moore and 63% of white women voted for Moore. On the contrary, 93% of black men voted for Jones while 98% of black women voted for Jones, showing a clear divide between votes by race. While African Americans only make up 28% of Alabama’s voting population, their clear stand with Jones was enough to lead Jones to victory. So, on December 12th when the vote was finally declared in Jone’s favor, there were many Democrats relieved while Republicans outraged believing Moore should have won.

Moore has since refused to concede in the race, believing voter fraud was committed and his followers were quick to stand behind him in his decision to fight to win the seat in Senate. Many figures are telling him to concede in the Race, including President Trump who previously endorsed him and wished for his victory. As of now, there is no clear direction of what Moore’s plans are to pursue his case, as Alabama does not permit a recount unless the distinction between the vote is less than 0.5%, so the White House and everyone are anxiously waiting to see either Moore fight for his claims of voter fraud or for him to concede to Doug Jones.
