Their hearts pound as they make their way to the starting line, and their stomachs suddenly drop as they watch the official raise his handgun; however, when that blank pistol is fired, the sound of the shot sends a burst of adrenaline throughout the body of each competitor, and the race has begun. This rollercoaster of emotions is all too familiar for the members of Nardin Academy’s Cross Country team.

Making each other better runners and competitors, the girls have been pushing, not only themselves, but also their teammates at practice.  Between painful workouts at Chestnut Ridge Park and teams runs around Hoyt Lake, they have clearly put an immense amount of effort forth since training began in mid-August, and it has certainly paid off.  Led by seniors Lizzie Galbo, Riley Noe and Julia Wing, Nardin has started off their season incredibly strong, as they are the only undefeated team in the Monsignor Martin league. In fact, the team defeated both Mount St. Marys and Nichols on Tuesday afternoon to continue on with their undefeated season. Ella Dileo (‘20) placed second for the Gators, followed by Grace Van Vessem (‘19), who took third place.  Also claiming top- ten spots were Rachel Martin (‘20), Maggie Cryan (‘20) and Kaitlyn Vogel (‘21), who finished 7th, 9th, and 10th.

When asked what has made this season so successful, Van Vessem answered, “I think that we are all really motivated. We want to win, so we push ourselves and each other”.

The team will finish their regular season on October 24th at Cazenovia Park against Mount Mercy as they prepare for the All-Catholic meet on November 5th at Knox Farms.
