Between the 60’s and the 80’s, Nardin changed quite a bit; but between the 80’s and today, Nardin changed even more.

Nardin’s dance and zumba teacher, Mrs. Kiener, graduated from Nardin in 1990, but experienced Nardin in the late 80’s.

Over two decades, the skirts at Nardin slowly got a bit shorter. By the 80’s, girls wore skirts just above the knee. According to Mrs. Kiener, no one dared break the dress code rules. Other rules were similar to the ones we still have today; no spaghetti straps or tank tops could be worn at any point. Further, feet had to be covered, no sandals were allowed. Today, heels and toes must be covered by shoes, although during the warmer months Nardin students may be allowed to wear sandals and flip flops on dress down days.

Dress code may not have affected the day to day life of Nardin students, but the schedule definitely did. Schedules did not include 9th period. Lunch periods were also different. Instead of having high school lunch during 6th and 7th periods, there were two 6th periods for lunch. 6a and 6b periods, as they were called.

Not everything was different in the 80’s, however. Activity periods were a common occurrence in the 80’s, as they are today. Although Nardin girls did not experience pep rallies in the 80’s, they did have mass.

One tradition that did not stand the test of time was that of a standing ovation given to all of the seniors as they entered assemblies, other than mass. According to Mrs. Kiener, the underclassmen would arrive at an assembly first. As the seniors entered, all of the underclassmen would stand and clap to welcome them. This stopped in the early 90’s.

Assemblies may not have been an everyday occurrence, but gym class was. When girls attended gym class, they wore gym uniforms composed of grey sweatpants and a polo shirt with a collar. Today, such uniforms are not used in the high school. Instead, Nardin girls bring their own, appropriate clothes to use during gym class.

Other than gym, clubs were a common non-academic affair at Nardin in the 80’s. Mrs. Kiener participated in SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving), as well as service club and the yearly musical. There was also an Outdoor Club, which was very popular. Today, however, Nardin students are offered many more options when it comes to clubs.

It was clubs and activities that led to the best memories for Mrs. Kiener and other Nardin students in the 80’s. For Mrs. Kiener, one of her favorite memories was most unusual.

During her freshman musical, which was Hello Dolly, a horse was needed for one scene. To create this horse, students had to be in a large costume trailing a carriage behind them. During one show, the carriage broke, splitting the horse in half. At the time this was unfortunate, but looking back it is a memory to be cherished and laughed at. For Mrs. Kiener, this was an unforgettable experience.

Other fun times included dances and proms. Mrs. Kiener remembers a Charity Ball, but it was not nearly as popular as it is today.

The world, of course, is bigger than Nardin and much was going on outside of Buffalo. George W. H. Bush was the president when Mrs. Kiener graduated in 1990. This, however, was not as important to Mrs. Kiener as was the rap music popular at the time.

It is funny how this trend has somewhat relapsed, seeing as rap music is again popular today.

This, in fact, is only one example of how some things have not changed since the 80’s.

Nardin, for example, is still a place for students to come and challenge themselves while still creating memories to last a lifetime.
