Cassie Whittemore, a junior at Nardin academy, will be starting a Team America Rocketry Challenge (or TARC) team next year. She has been doing TARC for five years, and has even gone to the national competition four times. This will be a very exciting (not to mention AWESOME) event for Nardin to participate in, so hopefully many people will join next year.

But what is TARC, exactly? For the most part, it involves building and launching rockets within specific parameters- the rocket needs to go this high in this much time and so forth. To prepare for the national competition, a team troubleshoots launching their rocket, practicing until it is ready to be used as a qualifier to get into the national competition in Washington D.C. The rocket is scored depending on how accurately it flew within the given parameters. The ideal score would be a zero, which signifies minimal deviation from what is required.

In addition to the National contest, there is also a competition in our region in Geneseo sponsored by Moog Inc. Moog actually has sponsored Cassie’s rocket team, funding them. For those of you who do not know, Moog is an international aerospace engineering company whose headquarters are right here in Buffalo, New York. Moog helps to build both commercial and military aircraft, and even helps with undersea exploration and certain medical equipment.

This will be a great opportunity for Nardin students. Currently, it is unknown how many people would be willing to do it; we’d need about ten people, but it’d be great if more students would like to join. Either way, with luck, TARC will come to Nardin.
