Imagine this:

It’s November first and you’re getting into your car.  You turn on the engine and tune into your favorite radio station, when suddenly you hear a strange sound.  “Could it be…Christmas Carols????

This was the scene that many middle aged working Americans woke up to on November first.  With Christmas Carols already playing on the radio, the holidays seemed fast approaching, but are they really?  Christmas is only a little less than two months away from Halloween, approximately the same amount of time from when kids start school to Halloween, and that time span felt long enough!  So what’s the rush?  Why does it feel like Christmas is being thrust upon us?  Before we answer that question, we need to take a step back and examine if Christmas, well, is Christmas anymore?  Ask any person over the age of seventy five and they’ll tell you that Christmas is a time to give back, appreciate life, spend time with loved ones, that presents don’t matter, etc.  Unfortunately, an elder’s wiser interpretation of Christmas doesn’t even come close to what most people take away from modern day Christmas.  Sure, those things apply but Christmas today is more about material goods that the magic and spirit the holiday is supposed to bring.  Point being: Christmas is changing.  If you need proof, just take a look through your mailbox, Sunday newspaper, turn on the television, or even just take a walk outside.  What do you see?  That’s right, adds screaming “BOGO!!  Everything half off!!  Get all of your Christmas gifts here!!  One stop shopping!!”  Christmas has turned into a way for big companies to make millions of dollars, and it’s entirely your fault.  We let the Christmas tradition of gift giving get way out of hand.  Instead of a kind gesture, gift giving has turned into this tiresome burden of getting everyone on your list a gift.  Most people just buy random gifts to give to people just to cross their name off their list with no thought or integrity behind the gift at all.  This is not what Christmas gift should be.  Christmas gifts overtime have lost genuine meaning and the Christmas spirit.  Also, how can we forget about Thanksgiving?  It’s hard to remember this holiday due to the fact that most Christmas decorations have been out since Labor Day.  Thanksgiving is supposed to be a holiday where you are thankful for what you have, but what’s it followed by?  Yup, Black Friday, a day where people run out to the store to buy everything in sight, leaving catastrophic results.  According to blackfridaydeathcount.com (yes, that’s a real site), seven people have died and ninety eight people have been injured during Black Friday.  Kinda makes Thanksgiving seem pointless, huh?  With the holiday season fast approaching, it’s hard to deny that shopping and material goods are all bad.  These things have become a huge part of this holiday’s culture and that’s fine; cultures change.  My point is that maybe this holiday season we all take a step back, relax, maybe donate some time, or give a gift or two that counts.  We don’t have to stop shopping, just maybe cut back a little and appreciate this beautiful time of year.
